2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Greywacke, Marlborough, New Zealand

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

On a par with the excellent 2020 vintage despite a trickier growing season, Greywacke's 94 point Sauvignon Blanc 2021 has to be one of the world's best value wines. Delicious vintage after vintage this is a truly cracking effort with high, racy acidity and delicious lemon and tropical fruit flavours. With the structure to evolve, we recommend a case buy pulling one per year over the next half dozen years to truly enjoy the full potential of this wine.

CRITIC REVIEWS

This stunning white is aromatic, fresh and intense, with notes of lemon curd, yuzu, peach, ripe melon and honeysuckle that are effortless and mouthwatering, backed by lemongrass and candied ginger notes on the long, expressive finish. Drink now. 94 Points. Wine Spectator

The 2021 Sauvignon from Greywacke is classic yet classy. It is richly aromatic yet not flamboyant, with good purity of fruit: expect flavors of black currant and nectarine alongside subtle tropical fruit and citrus. Due to a naturally low-yielding season, it offers impressive concentration and a ripe, succulent midpalate. The fine, mouthwatering acidity provides length and line on the zesty, passionfruit-infused, lightly structured finish. Delightful in youth, but it will evolve and provide a different Sauvignon experience in five to seven years. 93 Points. Vinous

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This 94 point Sauvignon Blanc from the iconic Marlborough area of New Zealand will pair fabulously with grilled fish, sushi, light or goats cheese salads and Thai food.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

A warm Marlborough winter in 2020 saw an early budburst with spring frosts leading to reduced crops in some vineyards. The cool weather during fruit-set was also challenging but the long, hot and dry conditions also reduced yields and stressed vines however the remaining grapes were exceptionally ripe. The early harvest during perfect weather allowed a leisurely selection and the very finest grapes were brought to the sorting table.

The sauvignon blanc grapes were harvested largely by machine during the night and were lightly pressed to yield a modest volume of high-quality juice. The juice was cold-settled and racked prior to fermentation, which was primarily carried out in stainless steel tanks with cultured yeast. A portion of the juice was allowed to undergo spontaneous indigenous yeast fermentation in old oak barrels. All individual vineyard batches were left on lees and kept separate until late June, when the blend was assembled. The wine was bottled in mid-August with alcohol 14.0%, pH 3.16 and acidity 6.8 g/l.

PRODUCER NOTES

The inimitable and tightly knit Judd family are at the helm of Greywacke, also the name of the familiar New Zealand bedrock in this region. And, a bedrock this label has undoubtedly become, synonymous with exceptional quality in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

The Greywacke ethos centres around natural and sustainable winemaking with organically farmed sites and a small, dedicated team running the entire operation. Crop levels are restricted to enhance concentration of flavour and a long, cool growing season produces fruit with incredible varietal intensity and bright, natural acidity. Meticulous canopy management regimes are employed to provide sufficient fruit exposure to deliver ripeness of flavour, textural richness and optimum acid balance. Greywacke is accredited with AMW status (Appellation Marlborough Wine), ensuring provenance, authenticity and integrity.
