2021 Morgon Cote du Py, Jean-Marc Burgaud, Beaujolais, France

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

From 60 year old vines, this outstanding Cote du Py Morgon from Jean-Marc Burgaud never fails to impress regardless of vintage and did supremely well in the tricky and changeable 2021 vintage.

Incredible purity of fruit, deep and delicious, this effort is drinking beautifully today with tremendous length but the clear structure to evolve over the coming decade. This is a case buy at this price. Top notch stuff.

CRITIC REVIEWS

The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py is one of the region's most dependable classics, unfurling in the glass with notes of cassis, sweet berry fruit, spices and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a seamless, complete profile, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. 94 Points. Will Kelley

The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py represents a blend of six hectares from around the climat, each with its own attributes. It has an intense bouquet of black cherries, black olive and saline notes, all very well defined with wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannins, superb mineralité and a harmonious finish featuring black cherries, blueberry, blood orange and citrus fruit, full of nervosité and admirably persistent. Burgaud said that he had been advised to bottle the various plots separately, but I think this blend represents more than the sum of its parts. 94 Points. Neal Martin

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This top notch Morgon cru Beaujolais will be a fine accompaniment to the best local charcuterie and will stand up to roast meats, game and stews too despite being made from a traditionally lighter grape.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

2020 was a year of extremes in Beaujolais with extreme heat in the summer months of July and August but quite a lot of rainfall in June. However, crop levels were healthy and the quality of the crop; excellent.

Jean-Marc tends gobelet vines with an average age of 60 years, and are planted at high density (10,000 per hectare). All the work in the vineyard in done by hand and although the winery isn't organically certified it operates by such principles. The wines are vinified whole bunch with no use of oak.

PRODUCER NOTES

Considered, alongside Jean Foillard and Louis Claude Desvignes as one of the greatest producers in Beaujolais and Morgon.

The last in a long line of winemakers, the vines are in Jean-Marc's blood and it was inevitable he would strike out on his own and found a winery and in 1989 he did just that after completing a diploma in oenology. The 19 hectares they now own are 70% in Morgon, with a small slice of Regnie and 5 hectares in Beaujolais Villages. Burgaud's techniques in the vineyards and winery are organic although he has opted not to apply the certification.
