2021 Miraval Rosé, Miravel, Côtes de Provence, France

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

The queen of celebrity Rosé wines from Provence, the wines of the Miraval estate are actually a genuine cut above and fabulous value for money. Miraval was a winery long before the Pitt/Jolie connection, located just off the famous Via Aurelia, the monks of the local monastery have been pressing the grapes at Miraval for centuries.

This latest vintage has been lauded by the critics with several bestowing this wine (perhaps begrudgingly) with 90+ points. There's no denying the quality of Miraval in 2021.

CRITICS REVIEWS

Vivid orange-pink. Mineral-tinged red berries, orange zest and nectarine aromas show fine clarity and pick up a floral nuance with air. Juicy and focused on the palate offering sappy tangerine and strawberry flavors that deepen steadily and take on a spicy white pepper note through the back half. Finishes long, gently chewy and precise, with repeating red fruit and spice notes. 91 Points. Vinous

Pure and chiseled in feel, with racy-edged white cherry, rose petal, jicama and jasmine notes backed by a lingering wet stone accent on the finish. This has length and subtleties that set it apart from the pack. Cinsault, Grenache, Rolle and Tibouren. 90 PointsWine Spectator

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This rosé pairs really well with smoked dishes, fish dishes and Thai food.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

A mild, dry winter followed by a cold spring where frost caused havoc in Burgundy and even reduced yields down in Provence. However, the flowering went well and the warm, dry summer helped the vines stay healthy. The grapes were harvested in mid-late September with good acidity and minerality.

The vineyards at Miraval are on limestone and clay on partial terraces which average 350m above sea level. The grapes are destemmed and vinified in stainless steel with a touch of wood and batonnage.

PRODUCER NOTES

Château Miraval is located in the Provence village of Correns, the first 100% organic village in France. Tucked away in its own private valley, the Château is surrounded by ancient woodlands and olive groves. Dedicated to the continual improvement of Miraval, Pitt & Jolie teamed up with Famille Perrin to take Miraval on a journey of improved winemaking.
