OVERVIEW

One of the best wines in the world made from the Trebbiano grape, the Marina Cvetic range from Masciarelli was created to showcase the terroir of this part of Abruzzo with four of the six wines being the top international varieties (Cab/Merlot/Chardonnay and Syrah) with the local Montepulciano and Trebbiano bottlings showing how perfectly placed Abruzzo is for cultivating these local varietals.

A frequent tre bicchiere from Gambero Rosso and perennial 93+ pointer, the 2020 vintage is yet to be professionally reviewed although fans of this wine know that even in an average vintage, let alone an exceptional one like 2020, this wine is straight up delicious, yet complex with the ability to evolve and improve with age.

CRITIC REVIEWS (2018)

Vibrant aromas of lemon zest and yellow apple peel are framed in accents of toast and honey on the nose. Fermented in barrel and aged for 12 months in new French oak, it is creamy, rounded and unctuous on the palate yet driven by tightly coiled citrus, apple and melon flavors all wrapped in a warm, toasty embrace. The energy and lift is substantial, with a brûléed lemon note lingering long on the finish. Enjoyable now, this would hold well through 2025. 93 Points. Wine Enthusiast

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

Trebbiano tends to pair well with vegetarian or fish pasta or pizza dishes. We love to enjoy this Trebbiano with a delicious cacio e pepe and hard Italian cheeses.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

Considered a great vintage where the grapes reached full ripeness yet maintained a good degree of acidity and ripeness. The Abruzzo wines from 2020 are considered exceptional, very complex and good for aging.

The grapes are hand picked, destemmed and undergo cryomaceration in pressing for 12 hours and fermentation in French oak barrique. The wine ages on its lees for the whole period with frequent batonnage, followed by further aging in bottle.

PRODUCER NOTES

Gianni Masciarelli was one of the most famous winemakers in Italy and established his winery in 1981, long before the trend for Montepulciano d'Abruzzo went international. An innovator, who grew his line to 22 labels, his respect for the land, the grapes and the entire winemaking process shone through in his wines.

His legacy is now in the safe hands of his daughter, Miriam Lee Masciarelli, whose degree in business and economics has surely come in handy disseminating the Masciarelli brand throughout the world. Miriam continues to put her father's ethos of letting the terroir speak for the wines at the heart of the brand and it is this concentration that has led to the continued success at Masciarelli Tenute Agricole.
