2017 Sori Tilden Barbaresco, Gaja, Piedmont, Italy

Cult Wine

OVERVIEW

A vintage that defied all expectations; the driest for a generation with the earliest picking dates produced wines of surprising freshness and character and nowhere is that more true than with the elegant jewel of the Piedmont crown; Barbaresco.

The king of that crown, Angelo Gaja, has produced a sterling Sori Tilden that can be approached today but will certainly improve over the coming two decades.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Extremely perfumed with strawberries, flowers, cherries and hints of ash and tar. Medium to full-bodied with tightness and raciness to the tannins. Polished, too. Very, very persistent. Try after 2022. 98 Points. James Suckling

A mix of earth, wild herb, cherry and plum flavors mine the rich texture in this intense red, which is well-balanced and lively, with a lingering aftertaste echoing the fruit and adding a mineral element. Gains polish with air. Best from 2024 through 2045. 95 Points. Wine Spectator

The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn opens to a luminous ruby appearance with pretty crimson highlights. This vintage appears lighter in color and concentration compared to past editions. The bouquet delivers a purity and sharpness nonetheless, but it offers less overall fruit. It shows subtle berry tones with blue flower, aniseed and candied orange peel. This very young Sorì Tildìn takes time to open, and it remains on the nervous side even after it has been given ample time in the glass. The best course of action is to wait until the 10-year mark before opening this bottle. It needs that extra time to soften and flesh out. 94 Points. Monica Larner

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

A bold wine with structure, Barbaresco is the most food friendly of the mighty Nebbiolo wines and will go especially well with meat and game dishes like veal, wild boar and duck.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

After the heralded 2016 vintage, 2017 was always going to be a tough sell, however the warm weather has produced a wine that is not only early drinking but also has the freshness to enjoy today and the structure to hold for a decade or two. A confounding vintage, 2017 in the hands of Gaja, has excelled.

Gaja Sori Tildin Barbaresco DOCG is named Sori, after the Piedmontese name for a “hilltop with southern exposure”, and Tildin, a nickname of Clotilde Rey, Angelo Gaja’s grandmother. It is considered to be one of the very best vineyard sites in Italy. The 8 hectare vineyard is located in the municipality of Barbaresco and is situated a little above the Costa Russi vineyard. The land, facing south, consists of clayey-calcareous marls and covers a surface of 3.38 hectares, with an average altitude of 260 m above the sea level. The vines are 45 years old on average. After harvest, the 100% Nebbiolo grapes undergo fermentation and maceration for around three weeks followed by ageing in oak for 24 months.

PRODUCER NOTES

Established in 1859, Gaja is a family-owned winery in Italy of cult status in the wine world. Giovanni Gaja founded this winery, and his great-grandson, Angelo Gaja runs the estate today. The family produces and vinifies grapes in the 250 acres of vineyards it owns in Italy's popular wine region, Piedmont and Tuscany. This estate in Piedmonte s located in the districts of Barbaresco and Barolo.

Angelo Gaja is a legend in Italian winemaking and given a lot of credit for putting Piedmont on the global map today. Part of the avant-garde of 'new' Barolo producers, he has helped shape the current economic climate and high demand for the very best wines of the Piedmont.
